I had the pleasure of witnessing and photographing a fini flight on Friday! A fini flight aka final flight is either the last flight in a certain plane for a person’s career or the last flight at a base before moving to the next one.
It’s tradition for the members of the squadron and family of the pilot to meet him/her on the flight line when they land. The punks (lieutenants) of the squadron will usually do something to the pilot. In Mulligan’s case, they put a whale costume over his head (despite much resistance) and taped him to a rail on the wing of his plane. It’s also tradition to spray the pilot with champagne or water. Mulligan’s wife was fortunate enough to celebrate by spraying her husband with a fire hose! It was such a bittersweet time! Everyone in the squadron is so excited for Mulligan’s next adventure although he’ll certainly be missed.
Congratulations, Mulligan! It was such a pleasure to capture your fini.
